On Friday 14th February 2025, the Kent County Agricultural Society held it’s Annual General Meeting at the Kent Showground. Having successfully served a 3-year term that saw the rebuilding of the Society’s events following the Covid period, Julian Barnes officially stepped down from his role as Chairman of the Board.

The team, directors and members of the Kent County Agricultural Society would like to extend their thanks to Julian for his services to the Society and for his support, enthusiasm and humour over the past three years.

Following a vote by the Society members in attendance at the AGM, the Kent County Agricultural Society is delighted to welcome new Chairman, Matthew Cullen. A fifth-generation farmer from East Kent, Matthew brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the role.

Growing up just outside Canterbury on his family’s farm, Matthew has been immersed in agriculture from a young age. He joined his local Young Farmers’ Club at age 11, following in his parents’ footsteps and over the years, has transformed the family farm into a specialized operation, focusing on breeding and showing pedigree English Longhorn cattle. In addition to managing his herd, Matthew manages a group of rare breed White Park cattle and his commitment to preserving native breeds has been recognised within the farming community.

Matthew’s involvement with KCAS began in 2017 when he joined the Livestock Committee. His passion and leadership led him to serve as Livestock Chairman for two consecutive years and was co-opted onto the Board of Directors in 2023, full Director in 2024 and now Chairman.

Beyond his work with KCAS, Matthew supports various industry events and groups and is a passionate advocate for British farming. His dedication to the agricultural sector is evident in his continued engagement with and support of the farming community.

As Chairman, Matthew aims to build upon the Society’s rich history, which dates back to its founding in 1923. He is committed to promoting agricultural education, supporting local farmers, and fostering community engagement. Under his leadership, KCAS will continue to serve as a cornerstone for Kent’s agricultural heritage and future growth.

The Society’s team, board of directors and members wish Matthew the best of luck as he takes on the role of Chairman of the Kent County Agricultural Society.
